MONTICELLO, Mo. -- Bond has been increased to $1 million for a LaGrange man who faces charges for allegedly beating a 2-year-old girl who later died.
Court records show that Judge Fred Westhoff denied the motion of Marcus A. Mays' attorney, Public Defender Todd Schulze, to reduce bond during an appearance Tuesday in Lewis County Circuit Court. Bond was originally set at $500,000.
In his order, Westhoff wrote that preliminary autopsy results show that the toddler died from injuries suffered "as a result of actions of the defendant."
Mays faces charges of abuse or neglect of a child, endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs and possession of a controlled substance.
In a probable cause statement in the case, Mays reportedly told police that he was angry with the girl, who was in his care, because she had soiled her pants. He reportedly pushed her into the toilet and struck her on the buttocks with a belt and that he struck the child in the head with the back of his hand numerous times, causing head injuries to the child.

The girl's mother told police that she left the child at Mays' home Aug. 16 and had planned on returning but fell asleep. Mays reportedly called her the next morning and told her something was wrong with the child, and when she arrived, she said Mays was holding the child, whose eyes were open but was not responding.
The autopsy was conducted at the Boone-Callaway County medical examiner's office in Columbia.
